Baby Black Tailed Deer – Fawn

This baby fawn was found next to his injured mother on Silverado Trail in Napa California. The mother was hit by a car and did not survive. The baby fawn was placed in the care of Wildlife Rescue Center of Napa County’s mammal team with four other orphaned deer and released back into the wild five months later.

Grey Fox – Pup

This baby fox pup was separated from her Mom in an early summer hailstorm. She was found wet, cold and alone crying in a field in the Carneros area in Napa, California. After three months of growing and learning to survive on her own she was released back into the wild.

Great Horned Owl – Fledgling

This juvenile Great Horned Owl came into care only one day after hatching. He spent four months in the supportive care from Wildlife Rescue Center of Napa County’s Raptor Team. A foster family of owls with youngsters his same age was located and he was released with them. His new family took him under their wing teaching him the finer points of survival and hunting. This photo catches him enjoying his first night back in the wild.

Opossum – Juveniles

This pair of juvenile opossums was two of six that came into Wildlife Rescue Center of Napa County’s care after their Mom was attacked and killed by a dog. All six babies were days old and still in the mother’s pouch. The tiny babies had to be tube fed around the clock for several weeks. After they were self-feeding and eight inches long, they were released back into the wild for a second chance at life.

Raccoon – Baby

This baby raccoon was found under a car in a garage in Napa, California. The residents’ activity scared the mother away leaving the baby behind. He was placed in the supportive care of the Wildlife Rescue Center of Napa County’s Mammal Team along with four other orphaned raccoons. Four months later this baby and his siblings tasted the sweet air of freedom in the wild when they were released.

Red Shouldered Hawk – Baby

This baby Red Shouldered Hawk fell out of his nest at the Silverado Country Club Golf Course. He landed on the “tee” box on the eighteenth hole on the North Course. When he was fully flight capable he was released in the same place he was found to join his family in the wild once more.

Red Shouldered Hawk – Juvenile

The juvenile Red Shouldered Hawk in this photo is about to be released after two months of supportive care. He came to the Raptor Team of Wildlife Rescue Center of Napa County after falling out of his nest in a windstorm. He was not a candidate for renesting because the whereabouts of his nest was unknown. Seconds after being released he began calling out to the other Red Shouldered Hawks in the area.

Western Screech Owl – Juvenile

This Western Screech Owl Juvenile came into care after glancing off the front grill of a pickup truck. The owl had a concussion and a compound fracture to his wing and needed experienced attention. His prognosis for a full recovery was poor. But after two months of supportive care, he made a full recovery and was flying successfully. He was released in an area with other screech owls to fly free again.

Short-Eared Owl – Adult

This beautiful Short-Eared Owl came into the supportive care of The Wildlife Center of Napa County’s Raptor Team after being shot with a pellet gun severely injuring its wing. Rehabilitation to get its wing pinned back together and strong enough to fly again was the needed combination to be a candidate for release. Sadly the injuries were overwhelming and he could not recover to flight capability.

Skunk – Baby

This adorable skunk baby was orphaned at a Rutherford winery in late May. He was four weeks old and unable to eat on his own. He was placed in supportive care with three other orphaned skunks for two and a half months. Once they were young adults and feeding on their own, he and his stepsiblings were released back into the wild.

Western Grey Squirrel – Juveniles

Three baby squirrels came into the supportive care of the Wildlife Rescue Center of Napa County after their nest was destroyed in a total tree removal. Their eyes and ears were closed and they were completely helpless. They had to be fed every four hours for weeks until they could feed on their own. Twelve weeks after the tree hit the ground they were released back into the wild to have a second chance at life.

This mother Tree Swallow is patiently waiting for Dad to bring some food for their young inside their nest. The photo was taken at Skyline Park here in Napa, California, where Tree Swallows are one of hundreds of bird species that live there.

Wildlife Rescue of Napa County’s Mammal Team rescued this 3.5-pound baby fawn after a concerned resident heard her. A mother Deer often leaves her baby for several hours to feed returning at dusk, but the baby is usually hidden and quiet. This baby’s incessant cries for hours and no sign of Mom at nightfall indicated she was orphaned. She was placed in care with four other orphaned deer and released back into the wild five months later.
